Plan Your Island Transfer Before Hiking the West Coast Trail
Choose a West Coast Trail entry point, connect from Vancouver by ferry and shuttle, and budget for permits, briefings, Island stays and weather delays.

The West Coast Trail is on Vancouver Island, not in Vancouver. This 75 km backcountry route in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve takes six to eight days of backpacking for the full trail, depending on conditions and experience. It is a separate expedition, not a Vancouver day trip. Parks Canada’s preparation guide sets out the route’s demands.
For a straightforward car-free approach, travel from Vancouver to Victoria, sleep there, then take a reserved trail shuttle the next morning. Book your trail entry first and build the transport around it.

The 2026 May 1–September 30 reservable hiking season has ended. Parks Canada lists the annual trail closure as October 7–April 30. Its booking page still gives the 2026 reservation launch date; neither that date nor the currently posted shuttle timetable should be assumed to apply to 2027. Check the official planning page linked above before booking next season.
Allow Six to Eight Hiking Days Plus Travel Time
Parks Canada says every group member should already be proficient in multi-day backpacking. A strong leader does not compensate for inexperienced hikers. Expect heavy packs, deep mud, slippery roots, steep ladders, river crossings and potentially damaged structures—not a continuous, maintained coastal footpath.
Allow the six to eight hiking days plus travel and contingency time. Parks Canada warns that heavy rain can make rivers impassable for days, and rescue may be delayed by weather and sea conditions. A tightly fixed flight immediately after your expected finish is a poor fit for this route.
If you want an outdoor day while staying in Vancouver, use our North Shore hike comparison. For waterfront walking without an expedition, choose a Vancouver seawall section.
Choose Your Entry and Exit Before Booking the Ferry
Parks Canada permits entry and exit at three locations; other access points are not allowed except for evacuation. The full route connects Pachena Bay and Gordon River. A midpoint trip can shorten the hike, but adds water-taxi logistics.
| Access Point | Transfer Implication | Hiking Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Pachena Bay | Near Bamfield; longer shuttle journey from Victoria | North end of the full route |
| Gordon River | Near Port Renfrew; shorter shuttle journey from Victoria | Southern 22 km alone typically takes two to three days |
| Balaats’adt (Nitinaht Village) | Water taxi to or from Nitinaht Narrows required | Parks Canada advises at least two to three nights to Pachena Bay, or four to five nights to Gordon River |
Those distances and recommended minimum stays come from Parks Canada’s route guidance. The midpoint is not automatically the simplest option: West Coast Trail Express lists its Nitinaht stop at Nitinaht Junction, 6 km north of the village, not at the water-taxi departure point. Confirm the onward transfer before reserving that shuttle. See the operator’s pickup locations.
Reach Victoria the Day Before Your Shuttle
The public-transit route from downtown Vancouver is:
Canada Line to Bridgeport → bus 620 to Tsawwassen → BC Ferries to Swartz Bay → BC Transit bus 70 or 72 to downtown Victoria.
Swartz Bay is north of Victoria, not downtown. TransLink and BC Transit fares are separate, and neither replaces your ferry ticket. BC Ferries describes the connections in its public-transport guide. Check services for your travel date before choosing a sailing.
For fewer separate connections, the BC Ferries Connector provides direct coach service between downtown Vancouver or YVR and downtown Victoria. Check its service and booking options for your travel date.
Leave time for ferry check-in, not just boarding. At Tsawwassen, booked foot passengers travelling to Swartz Bay must check in 30–60 minutes before departure under the currently posted rules. That window is specific to this passenger category and route; see the Tsawwassen terminal information.
Match the Trail Shuttle to Your Briefing
West Coast Trail Express’s published May 1–September 30 schedule departs Victoria at 6:45 a.m. Its pickup is the Capital City Bus Station, 721 Douglas Street. The currently posted times are not a confirmed 2027 timetable.
| Entry Point | Shuttle Arrival | Posted Briefings |
|---|---|---|
| Gordon River | 9:15 a.m. | 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. |
| Pachena Bay | 12:30 p.m. | 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. |
The shuttle times come from the operator’s schedule; briefing requirements come from Parks Canada. You must watch the hiker safety primer and attend a pre-hike briefing. You may check in the day before your hike.
The posted arrivals precede the 10 a.m. Gordon River briefing and the 2 p.m. Pachena Bay briefing, respectively, but that does not guarantee enough time to begin hiking. Parks Canada recommends starting at least five hours before sunset. Match your arrival, briefing and first day’s route rather than treating arrival at the trailhead as your hiking start time.
For a midpoint start, Balaats’adt’s posted briefing is 7 a.m., subject to change, before the 8 a.m. water taxi. An overnight stay in the village may be needed: the Victoria shuttle does not arrive in time for that morning’s departure. The Nitinaht Junction transfer also needs to be settled separately.
Nanaimo is another approach, but the operator contracts that leg to another company, with a transfer at Lake Cowichan. It requires reservations with at least 48 hours’ notice. Victoria is the simpler starting point if you want to avoid that transfer.
Reserve Pickup From Your Exit Trailhead
Book your return from the exit, not automatically from your starting point. For a full-route hike starting at Gordon River, that means pickup at Pachena Bay; starting at Pachena Bay means pickup at Gordon River.
| Exit Point | Posted Pickup | Victoria Arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Pachena Bay | 1:45 p.m. | 7:45 p.m. |
| Gordon River | 5:15 p.m. | 7:45 p.m. |
These are the currently posted return times in the operator’s schedule linked above. Plan another Island overnight rather than relying on a late ferry connection or a same-day flight. Your intended finish date still needs room for trail delays.
Budget Beyond the C$264.50 Trail Fee Subtotal
The official fee schedule checked on October 7, 2026 lists C$208.50 per person for the backcountry permit and orientation, plus C$28 for each of the Gordon River and Nitinaht Narrows ferries.
For a full end-to-end hike, C$208.50 + C$28 + C$28 = C$264.50 per person, before reservation fees, park admission, travel, accommodation and food. Midpoint water-taxi charges are separate. Verify next season’s prices in the official fee schedule.
The figures above do not establish a complete trip budget: no current ferry-to-the-Island fare, trail-shuttle fare, accommodation price or midpoint water-taxi price is supplied here.
Before departure, use Parks Canada’s preparation guide to plan equipment, tides, drinking-water treatment and emergency communication. Leave a trip plan with someone at home, and do not rely on cellular coverage.
