Hanlan’s Beach Is in Toronto, Not Vancouver
Looking for Hanlan’s Beach in Vancouver? It’s in Toronto. Choose Wreck Beach for clothing-optional beach time or English Bay for an easier outing.

Hanlan’s Beach usually means Hanlan’s Point Beach on the Toronto Islands—not a Vancouver beach. The City of Toronto lists it as clothing-optional, reached by ferry or private water taxi to Hanlan’s Point. If you’re planning a Vancouver trip, Wreck Beach is the local clothing-optional option to consider instead. (Toronto beach directory, UBC’s Wreck Beach guide)
The useful choice is whether you want clothing-optional beach time specifically, or simply an easy waterfront stop.
For a clothing-optional outing: Wreck Beach
Wreck Beach is beside UBC’s Vancouver campus and forms part of Pacific Spirit Regional Park. A main access route is Trail 6 at the west end of University Boulevard, where a steep staircase leads down to the shore. Plan for the climb back up, not just the descent; Trail 6 is not a step-free route. UBC recommends bringing your own supplies and respecting other beachgoers’ privacy. (UBC)
For a car-free visit:
- Plan the bus journey to UBC first. Use TransLink’s trip planner for your starting point and travel date; it shows transfers, journey times and service alerts.
- Then walk to Trail 6. Reaching the campus is only the transit portion of the trip; you still have the walk and beach stairs ahead.
- Save your return stop location. UBC has several exchanges and individual stops, so identify where you’ll board before heading down to the beach. (UBC transport guidance)
Bring water, food and footwear suitable for the stairs. Leave enough time and energy to climb out before sunset. As of October 10, 2026, Metro Vancouver lists beach hours as 7 a.m. to sunset. There are no lifeguards. Alcohol, fires, camping and loud amplified music are prohibited; carry rubbish and recycling back to the bins at the top of the stairs. Check the Metro Vancouver park page before setting out for current rules and advisories.
For an easier downtown beach stop: English Bay
Choose English Bay if clothing-optional use is not the reason for your search. It sits along Beach Avenue between Gilford and Bidwell streets, with the seawall beside it, public washrooms and a concession. That makes it a simpler choice for combining beach time with a waterfront walk rather than committing to Wreck Beach’s staircase. (City of Vancouver)

If you meant the Toronto beach
Use the City of Toronto’s ferry routes and schedules to plan from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. Check your travel date before assuming a direct Hanlan’s Point sailing: Toronto Island ferries run year-round, but the individual routes change seasonally.
