Choose the Cheapest Fare From YVR on Your First Day
Compare the 2026 YVR AddFare on a Compass DayPass, stored value and tap-to-pay, then calculate the cheapest option for your Vancouver arrival day.
From July 1, 2026, neither Compass Stored Value, tap-to-pay nor a DayPass bought at YVR automatically avoids the C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare. An adult DayPass bought at a Sea Island station costs C$19.05 for qualifying travel toward Vancouver: C$12.55 for the pass plus C$6.50. An eligible Monthly Pass is exempt, as is a DayPass purchased outside Sea Island. For a visitor’s first day, pay-as-you-go is usually cheaper for a small number of separate trips; a DayPass becomes competitive as the trip count rises.

The C$19.05 YVR DayPass Total Is Conditional
TransLink’s adult DayPass price is C$12.55 from July 1, 2026, according to its fare-pricing table. The airport charge is separate.
A DayPass costs C$19.05 when all of these conditions apply:
- It was purchased at YVR–Airport, Sea Island Centre or Templeton.
- The relevant journey begins at one of those stations.
- Travel is eastbound from Sea Island.
- The trip continues to Bridgeport or beyond.
- The passenger is not using an exempt fare product.
The calculation is:
C$12.55 DayPass + C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare = C$19.05
A DayPass purchased outside Sea Island is exempt under TransLink’s YVR Airport AddFare policy. Unusual remote-loading or first-activation arrangements are not fully classified in the published guidance, so confirm with TransLink if an exemption depends on such an arrangement.
The AddFare also does not apply when travelling toward YVR or when a journey remains within YVR–Airport, Sea Island Centre and Templeton. Eligible Compass or contactless charges for travel confined to those three stations are refunded after tap-out.
July 2026 Raised Both Parts of the Airport Cost
The DayPass and YVR AddFare both changed on July 1, 2026. Combining a new fare with an old surcharge produces the wrong total.

The DayPass change formed part of an average system-wide fare increase of 5%. The airport charge rose for the first time since 2010, according to CBC’s report on the 2026 fare changes.
Advice quoting a C$11.95 DayPass, C$5 AddFare or C$16.95 combined total is outdated for travel on or after July 1, 2026.
Fare Products Receive Different AddFare Treatment
A Compass Card is a payment medium, not a single type of fare. It can hold Stored Value, a DayPass or a Monthly Pass, and those products do not receive identical airport treatment.

Compass Stored Value
Stored Value is deducted from a Compass Card as journeys are taken. Carrying the card does not create an airport exemption. A qualifying eastbound trip from Sea Island incurs the C$6.50 AddFare in addition to the Stored Value fare.
Compass DayPass
A DayPass provides unlimited eligible travel in all zones during its service-day validity. For the airport surcharge, purchase location matters: a DayPass purchased outside Sea Island is exempt, while one purchased at YVR–Airport, Sea Island Centre or Templeton can incur the AddFare.
Tap-To-Pay
Tapping an accepted contactless credit or debit card pays the regular contactless fare. It does not create a DayPass, use the lower Compass Stored Value rate or provide an airport exemption.
A bank card already in your wallet is not treated as a pre-purchased fare. On a qualifying journey from Sea Island, the regular contactless fare and AddFare both apply.
Monthly Pass
An eligible Monthly Pass has its own AddFare exemption. The exemption comes from the loaded fare product, not from possession of a Compass Card.
Stored Value Usually Wins on a Light Arrival Day
The correct comparison starts with the regular fares, then adds the airport charge separately where it applies.

For one qualifying two-zone journey from YVR, the totals are:
- Stored Value: C$4.20 + C$6.50 = C$10.70
- Contactless: C$5.10 + C$6.50 = C$11.60
- DayPass bought at YVR: C$12.55 + C$6.50 = C$19.05
Stored Value is therefore cheapest if that airport journey is the only separate fare of the day. The comparison changes when additional journeys fall outside the original transfer window.
A single fare remains valid for 90 minutes on buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus and HandyDART. A transfer within that window does not necessarily count as another fare. The calculator treats each entered trip as a separate 90-minute fare window.
Under the base fares alone, a DayPass first matches or beats Stored Value at five separate one-zone fares, three two-zone fares or three three-zone fares. Against contactless, the corresponding points are four one-zone fares, three two-zone fares or two three-zone fares. These thresholds assume every journey requires a new fare and the same AddFare treatment applies to both options.
Evening, Weekend and Bus Trips Lower Pay-As-You-Go Costs
Bus and HandyDART travel is always charged as one zone. Trips beginning after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays also use one-zone pricing across the system. The same one-zone rule applies on weekends and provincial statutory holidays.
These rules can make pay-as-you-go particularly attractive for a late arrival. A visitor might pay for the airport journey, walk around one neighbourhood and make only one later transit trip. There may be too few separate fares to recover the DayPass cost.
A morning arrival followed by several SkyTrain, SeaBus and bus journeys creates different arithmetic. The DayPass removes zone calculations and covers repeated eligible travel until 4 a.m. the following day.
When planning, count fare windows rather than vehicles or attractions. A Canada Line ride followed by a bus transfer within 90 minutes can remain one journey. Returning to a hotel several hours later and heading out again generally creates additional fare windows.
The DayPass Covers Most TransLink Services, Not West Coast Express
A DayPass covers unlimited eligible travel in all fare zones on:
- Buses;
- SkyTrain, including the Canada Line;
- SeaBus; and
- HandyDART.
It remains valid until 4 a.m. the following day. It does not cover West Coast Express.
That coverage lets an arriving visitor continue through Vancouver without pricing every bus, SkyTrain or SeaBus ride separately. It does not guarantee that the pass is cheapest. The value depends on how many journeys require new fares, when they begin and whether multi-zone pricing applies.
Adult fares generally apply from ages 19 to 64. Eligible seniors aged 65 and older, youth aged 13 to 18, and HandyCard holders may qualify for concession fares. Age-based concession eligibility requires valid photo identification. The calculations here use adult prices only.

A trip only among YVR–Airport, Sea Island Centre and Templeton is also exempt from the AddFare. A passenger using an eligible Monthly Pass can travel eastbound beyond Bridgeport without the surcharge.
The practical rule is to separate the two decisions. First, total the regular fares needed for the day and compare them with the C$12.55 DayPass. Then apply the C$6.50 YVR AddFare according to the origin, direction, destination, DayPass purchase location and fare product.
